Product Details

Exclusive to ZSL, this range features 3 of our more famous animals from over the last 188 years. These lovingly designed soft toys are fully jointed (except Guy, who's head is fixed), and a tag which details some of the animals background. Winnie the American Black Bear - Winnie was an American Black Bear who was given to London Zoo in 1914 by a Canadian Lieutenant at the start of the First World War. Winnie was visited by AA Milne, who was inspired to write the stories of Winnie the Pooh. A.A. Milne and Christopher Robin (taken from www.whiteriver.ca): "This little bear captured the hearts of many visitors to the Zoo, among them A.A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin Milne. They became frequent visitors and it was Christopher who added "Pooh" to Winnie's name. He got the name from his pet swan named Pooh. Christopher had a bear given to him on his first birthday on August 21, 1921 which he first called Edward Bear, but soon changed to "Winnie-the-Pooh" after the playful Winnie at the London Zoo. A.A. Milne started to write stories about a loveable bear in his children's books based on that bear in the Zoo. In his first edition in 1926, he mentioned that these stories were about this bear and his son and his son's stuffed animals. We have been told that Christopher Robin had a birthday party at the Zoo that included some of his friends and "Winnie-the-Pooh" as well, since it was held in Winnie's den."

A perfect reminder of the day

At £30.00 you may think this bear is rather expensive, but the quality of the toy is outstanding and truely captures the essence of the black bear.

The picture does not do it justice and once you see it in the "fur" you will understand what I mean. We bought ours following our visit to the Zoo and fell in love with it straight away.

A quality item and a perfect reminder of our day out.
