Product details

Product body:

Here you will find some of the earliest photographs of living birds, fish, giraffe, camel, rhinoceros, thylacine etc., as well as all the known photographs of Jumbo the elephant, a living quagga and other extinct and rare species.

The photographs which are accompanied by full and detailed captions provide a fascinating window on the vanished world of London Zoo in the Victorian and Edwardian period, when, perhaps more than any other collection, it formed the bridge between primitive manageries which preceded it and the scientifically operated, conservation oriented zoos of the 21st Century.

This is the second edition of this work, first published in 1996. Approximately two hundred images from the first edition have been retained and two hundred fresh ones have been added, making a total of about four hundred photographs in all.

This is an incredible book for any zoo enthusiast and a beautiful pictorial history of London Zoo. The photo's, the descriptions and the vintage maps offer an insight to the development that lead to the modern day zoo. This is not a book for your bookcase, it deserves the centrepiece of your coffee table. This is a book that you will pick up many, many times, always finding something new to amaze you.
