I can't believe no-one's reviewed this before. It's a great experience. Myself, my wife and my daughter stayed overnight just before Christmas. We got a day at the zoo, with free parking, had our bags taken to the lodge, then had a bit of time to settle in before the evening's activities.

These activities involved making snacks for the anteaters, and feeding them, having a tour of the BUGS building, getting a nice warm drink, then - because it was Christmas - the children had a meeting with Father Christmas, who had kindly agreed to stay late and let the elves look after the workshop for a bit.

After a very good meal in the restaurant (drink was extra but the food was included) we were taken down to below the elephant house where we made up bags of spices and herbs for the wild dogs to rip up in the morning. This activity apparently varies from day to day and we just happened to get wild dog enrichment! We also went into the nocturnal enclosure, which of course was just settling down to sleep during their 'day'...a bit tricky to get your head round, but all fine. Then it was back to the lodges, where the beds (including the sofa beds) had been made up.

The lodges are spotlessly clean and whilst they're also rather small, that's probably because you don't really stay in them except when you're sleeping. It was a great, if slightly unnerving experience, to be woken in the night by roaring lions and other animal noises! We were up at about 5:30 the next day, because that let us get into the walkway above the lion enclosure, where armed with a cup of tea and a camera we got to witness them waking up and roaring in the dawn light...a great experience. Then back to bed, of course, for a couple of hours.

Breakfast was a full, cooked affair (other less calorific options were available) and then it was a tour to the areas that are usually busy during open hours in the zoo...the komodo dragons, the wild dogs (who seemed delighted with our sacks of spice), feeding camels...and then it was a bit of free time, with the zoo essentially empty for about 30 minutes before the main doors opened.

You're free to stay at the zoo all day; we ended up leaving at about 2pm, I think, after lunch. An incredible experience and one that I'd repeat immediately if it was possible. Do it - it's great.
